Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Chukki rangoli 21 to 11 for Sankranti

This kolam may represent the claws or pincers (pedipalps says Google) of a scorpion-like insect / animal - 6 of them in this big Pongal rangoli design with dots.

First step for the chukki rangoli for Sankranthi competition.

Since the dot pattern is 21 to 11 it takes time to complete and fill with colours so we can try for festivals like Sankranthi or for New Year.

They may also represent the claws of a tiger, so it is also called puli nagam kolam in Tamil according to my elder sister who lives in Mumbai an expert in rangoli making.

Intermediate steps through images are shown for this big chukki rangoli.   To state the obvious, draw the patterns in the centre and then proceed to the outer patterns or vice versa depending upon how you are comfortable with.

To complete it with colours, patience is required.  If the background is also to be filled, we will need 15 minutes extra.  The entire kolam design with colours and the background also in colour is below.

This kolam is called Mandra kappa in Telugu is one of the important muggulu designs drawn during Sankranthi.

If you know what it is called in Kannada, please let me know.  It would be nice to get information on this big yet simple rangoli.

My mother lived in Vizianagaram a town near Vishakhapatnam.  She learnt a lot of rangolis from her mother seven decades back!  We are fortunate that this ancient wisdom has been handed over from my mother, and I feel blessed that I can hand over to all of you through social media.

Social media is a double-edged sword, if we use it wisely, we will benefit from it.  There is a wealth of free knowledge available.

This  chukki rangoli is an important Sankranti rangoli (for my mother) drawn by my mother, taught by her mother (confusing isn't it -, taken from for the people, by the people and of the people!).

Though the design is simple as we use only rhombuses and straight lines for connecting the dots, it will take a lot of time (90 minutes approx.)  to complete it because it is a relatively big.

We all like to be praised.  It is one of the failings of us, humans.  Try this beautiful rangoli and earn the praise of your family and neighbours.
