Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Rangoli tips - To get a compact rangoli  place the dots as closely as possible.  This way we can accommodate it even in small spaces

The dot pattern is 10,9,8,7,8,9,10 and 3,2,1 dot on either side

To get an awesome rangoli design draw the lines without joints.  This point I invariably stress in many posts.

For our family, Bhogi is a festival as important as Sankranthi.  When we were young and lived in a small town, my parents gave us new clothes to wear.

We had to take oil bath, go to the nearby temple wearing the new clothes (just like Dipavali).

People performed kolattam (also called stick dance in which women hit small sticks with rhythm, music and dance) on the streets.

They came to the houses in the streets with a big bag.  which was filled with newly harvested rice by the residents.  We made a mixed vegetable dish called goth bhaji using fresh vegetables.

Invariably relatives and friends came to our house, and we also went to their houses.

These step-by-step pics should make it clear about this chukki rangoli aankhon vidhana.  Try this for Makar Sankranti too.
