Padi kolam- rangoli with lines- lines muggulu

Big and grand padi kolam can be drawn for important functions like marriage, grahapravesam.

This series of pictures should be self explanatory. Decorate with kaavi powder mixed in water.

Padi kolam or muggulu usually start with a square base and are expanded.

They are invariably drawn free hand and rarely with dots.

I will try to add some padi kolam with dots too. Padi kolam can be drawn on all auspicious occasions like weddings, ( marriage ) ,

house warming, and for festivals - Ugadi rangoli, Pongal kolam and any other festival.

While elaborate and colourful designs with dots are drawn outside the house we can draw such muggulu inside the house because such traditional muggu reflect the festive spirit to a great extent.

Actually the final picture may be confusing to some but actually these designs are very simple, the only area

requiring our concentration is that the lines should be as parallel as humanly possible.

Remember we are drawing without the aid of geometric instruments like scale or we are not using a piece of chalk to draw the template first.

Drawing thin very long lines comes with practice so we can draw the squares separately also.

Connecting the squares with more lines .Adding curved lines enhances the beauty of the kolam.Paisleys also add to the beauty of any design.

The first kolam in this series is a classical and very traditional padi kolam with square base and step like formations ( padi is steps in Tamil ) on all four sides . The edges are decorated with simple patterns and the four sides are decorated with what appear like lamps or deepam on a temple gopuram or tower. Hence this kolam or muggulu may a suitable theme fora special Karthigai Deepam deepam kolam . A number of images are given and they are self explanatory. Hope you enjoy drawing this kolam because I too did like it a lot. This can be categorised under line kolam too as we form the pattern with a number of straight lines.

I try to keep them simple so that they can be practised by beginners or learners too.

These designs can be drawn for Fridays and festivals like Varalakshmi Vratham , Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi , Navaratri for nine days and of course Dusshera. They can also be drawn in the Puja room for Diwali

This is a basic padi kolam , it probably qualifies as a padi kolam or steps rangoli ( a transliteration )

because of the square centre through drawn differently. The images I hope will be self explanatory.

The traditional padi kolam or geethala muggu or rangoli designs with lines is drawn for auspicious occasions , so we can draw it for an auspicious festival like Diwali also and for Margazhi Fridays. We can also draw it for New Year kolam instead of the other designs we try for a change. Please try for Diwali 2016.

The beauty of the padi kolam is unique and totally different. The final image may appear somewhat confusing but when we watch a video , it will be definitely helpful in learning it quite easily.

I have tried a free hand version. First draw four straight lines (we can draw more or less lines according to our convenience), Then draw four lines perpendicular to this set, again four more perpendicular to the second set. Finally complete with the pattern with lines so that a small square is formed at the centre. Using these straight lines form four petals from each set of lines such that they face four different directions. Fill the square at the centre with pink colour. Choose the colours for the design ( I have chosen yellow, blue, red and green) so that a colourful design symmetrical in pattern and colours is formed. . When drawn plain it is a very simple and easy rangoli.

If we want a bigger kolam - for the festivals like Navratri, Varalakshmi Vratham , the lines rangoli ( geethala muggulu ) below based on the padi kolam theme - it is not exactly a padi kolam should be useful. The images show the steps for this kolam.

Another lines rangoli or muggulu with lines with a hexagon at the centre. Such designs can be drawn on Fridays as dwara muggulu . For Fridays we decorate the rangoli with kaavi. With just a number of parallel and intersecting lines we can get beautiful patterns in these rangoli designs with lines.

Another rangoli with lines this time using a 5 to 3 dot grid. Usually these designs are drawn free hand, I have tried one using a small dot grid so that it is easy to practice. The images below give us the steps

One more padi kolam, this time a relatively big one that can be drawn on Fridays, for festivals like Ugadi, Tamil New Year. The number of images below show the steps in detail. Some padi kolam designs after completion may appear confusing but they are very simple with lines drawn parallel and perpendicular to some reference point and then interconnecting with curved lines. Decorations can be made, free hand according to our imagination to make the padi kolam more attractive.

An advanced padi kolam for Pongal or Sankranti ( பொங்கல் படி கோலங்கள் )

For festivals it is preferable to have five lines , usually we use four or five lines. The images below show a basic and hence easy padi kolam that can be drawn quite easily because only the central square pattern is used with decorations at the corners, inside - simple free hand patterns.

One more rangoli design with lines only. I hae used a star pattern and on the edges I have drawn the krishnan dindu pattern that is regularly used in kanya kolam and padi kolam. The patterns intersect to form a labyrinth like formation. As usual the final picture may appear confusing but when drawn as elements it is quite easy and it is only repetition of the lines and patterns. The images below should be useful for giving an idea and the better option would be to view the videos on my YouTube Channel - Rangolisansdots as videos are usually more informative than pictures.

Such muggu can be drawn for festivals like Varamahalakshmi Pooja or Vratha, Sravan month , Fridays and functions like betrothal ( Nitschaya dhartham ) , house warming , seemantham ( baby showers ) and many other functions.
Now the above kolam is a bit complicated, we may want to draw a very simple padi kolam or lines rangoli on Fridays. On Fridays I prefer padi kolam at the entrance and a kaavi border for padi kolam or any rangoli is a rule for me !

In case you are looking for a very simple and basic padi kolam for Friday or for festivals like Navratri, Avani Avittam, Varalakshmi Vratham or Pooja or house warming functions this kolam may fit the bill. I have drawn the central square with 4 lines and the outer triangle has been filled with four lines. After drawing the lines, add the outer floral decorations and the peripheral decorations as shown.

One more simple padi kolam or geethala muggu as my mother used to say in Telugu , for festive occasions like Navratri or Varalakshmi Nonbu or habba . There is no starting problem in padi kolam because we invariably start with square pattern at the centre with 4 or 5 line drawn as shown. The central space left is filled with a pair of diagonals and dots. Next draw the set of four lines on four sides of the square. Connect these four line patterns with curved lines as shown. Thenext step is to draw the the pair of curved lines as shown in the third photo. The gaps on the four corners of the squares are filled with some free hand patterns, similarly the four sides are also decorated with simple patterns.

One more easy padi kolam step by step. As usual draw the square base. In the previous design we drew a set of four lines parallel to the square , we draw set of four lines inclined to the square and touching the edges as shown in the images below. Then connect the gaps on the four sides with two sets of curved lines as shown. Finally add lotus patterns and floral petals to complete the padi kolam design . A beautiful and simple design for Friday vaasal padi kolam.
