Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Border rangoli designs with colours

Two images giving 5 border rangoli ideas

In the first image the second design can be independently drawn as a rangoli particularly for festivals like Republic Day

or Independence Day because of the use of colours orange, white and green while the first design is a simple pattern.

In the second image three borders are shown. .  The first one is a simple design suitable for the circumference of a big rangoli.

The second one is a flower design with leaves on either side.  It can be drawn on the top or bottom of a rangoli or on all sides of rangoli.

The last one is a very simple design and is usually used as an extension along the periphery of free hand circular rangoli

This collection is in addition to many more ideas I have shared.  You can search in my blog for border kolam or border rangoli

or use the labels given at the bottom of the post to delve deeper into this variety of rangoli on this website.

Sometimes they are also used as rangolis on thresholds of doors, exterior thresholds (main entrance door) , interior thresholds.

I use four to five manai (planks) for Varamahalakshmi festival of various sizes.  I draw a small kolam and borders (if there is space) on each plank. We can use these tiny designs for the purpose as also for borders.
Talking of Varamahalakshmi Pooja, two of my brothers and a sister live in the same city.  After the Pooja, I make it a point to go to my brothers' houses to receive thamboolam. For me maternal side thamboolam as we say in Tamil, is very important.  I am very sentimental about it .

When we draw a rangoli without dots, we have to be at our creative best.  Usually, we put all our effort into creating a good pattern and adding colours.

After completion some of us add borders either only at the bottom or at the top and bottom or on both sides.  Some have the habit of decorating with borders on all four sides.

After completing the main rangoli, sometimes in a hurry add some random designs for the borders.  Hence, I have shared these border rangoli designs for Diwali with colours so that they complement the main kolam drawn for the festival and this principle applies to other festivals too.
