Dot rangoli designs with number of dots

One of the smallest dot grids ( I have designs with 3 and 4 dots also ) but among  the small dot grids 5 is quite popular .  This dotted rangoli design with a 5 by 3 dot pattern is drawn as shown in the image which should explain the steps. Draw two hexagons , inside the small hexagon, outside the bigger hexagon and between the two draw patterns as shown in the images to get this rangoli.
How to draw a rangoli design easy ? Observe the photos.

kuthu vilakku kolam with 6 dots

This kolam can be drawn on Friday, for festivals like Navratri for the golu , Varalakshmi Vratham or Karthigai Deepam also.  Why not for Diwali which the festival of lights .  A simple kolam with two deepam patterns and the feet of the Goddess Lakshmi between them

The dot pattern is 7 to 4 - idukku pulli  The images show the steps.  The photos should be self explanatory.  Such simple rangoli can be drawn on a daily purpose rangoli

One more rangoli with 7 by 4 dot pattern with hibiscus flower like patterns drawn radially. The images show the step by step procedure ( podum murai in Tamil ) .

This is not exactly a hibiscus flower.  Only the petals may appear to represent a hibiscus petal.
After these are not portrait rangoli .  This is a common man or woman's art so that every one can draw it daily. So only some representations are drawn.

If my memory serves me right hibiscus rosa sinensis  is the botanical name for hibiscus flower (!)

8 by 8 dot rangoli designs
This is a common kolam that represents flower pots with small plants , we can add some flowers also. I have altered it slightly retaining the basic design.

One of the most important aspects to be noted while making kolam is that when we place the dot grid the distance between the dots should be optimum.  If they are placed too far apart or if placed too close the beauty of the kolam cannot be appreciated.  How do we know what is the optimum distance.  Obviously , that comes with a little  practice and experience.  Now the kolam - step by step - through the images below

9 dots rangoli - thamarai kolam or lotus rangoli
Lotus is one of the favourite themes of many a rangoli designer among the flowers along with rose.
Lotus is also preferred for Friday rangoli designs because the flower is usually associated with Goddess Lakshmi.  Here a 9 to 5 lotus rangoli Quite an easy design the more curved the petals  more naturalistic it appears.

Rangolisansdots - the theme is rangoli without dots.  However there have been numerous requests on my YouTube channel for rangoli with dots also.  So I have devoted quite a few posts for various types of rangoli designs with dots.

Drawing simple kolam with basic geometric shapes and free hand patterns is usually part of our daily kolam collection.

The next kolam , I jump to a not so easy kolam .  This is usually drawn free hand , a lines rangoi with twists and turns , if we look at the final picture some of us may get confused as to where it starts and where it finishes.

So to make it easy for those who wish to learn how to draw this rangoli , I converted it into a dot rangoli design .  The dot grid is a non standard design.

With four dots on all sides with a space in the shape of a square at the centre.  We usually, use this type of dot grid in sikku kolam which we call kulam kolam ( kulam means tank ).

We can see that in a temple tank steps are there are on all four sides and water is in the middle at the bottom.  Similarly these dot grids are called kulam kolam because dots are placed on all four sides with space at the centre.
The dot grid is four by four on all four sides.

The first step is to draw the patterns with straight lines meeting as shown in the image , drawn on all four sides
Next step is shown in the image below.  Compare with the previous image to see how the lines are extended further

Once the lines are complete on all four sides .  Two lines are drawn as shown to make it a set of four lines ( 2, 4 and 5 are the preferred combination for these type of traditional rangoli designs )

Next is the set of four lines , curved lines arising from the straight lines .  These are drawn on all sides

Now the curved lines are drawn inside the square to complete the kolam

This is how the kolam or rangoli looks after completion .  It appears as if the lines are entangled or intertwined  but when split into elements as shown in the images it is probably one of the easiest rangoli designs that can be created.

Add some free hand decorations at the centre to complete the kolam.  Looks very difficult but the simple method and the number of images showing the steps should make it very easy to learn and try for festivals.

These type of traditional rangoli designs are drawn for festivals and functions like weddings, house warming .
11 dots line kolam designs
This is a unique rangoli design with dots and lines , I created for my YouTube Channel.  As the adage goes ( I do not remember who said this ) - we forget what we hear , we remember what we see and we understand what we do.  Rangoli or kolam is such an art , it has visual appeal and also we learn it by seeing.  It will not suffice , if we attend classes and listen to lectures for such activities , we have to see or observe and we have to try to understand.

That is how this art was handed over from generation to generation from mother to daughter .   So Rangolisansdots has many images showing the steps so that we can remember what we see and we can also try to do and understand.

I can write a lot about this pictures explaining the steps but ultimately we have to take a note book and  pencil or pen and try this design .  It is a little tricky and it is likely that we may get  stuck up in the initial steps after which it  is cake walk.

The dot pattern is 11 to 6 idukku pulli or oodu pulli  kolam.  Observe the images carefully and try this rangoli for Karthigai Deepam or Diwali with deepam designs all around.  Replace them with lotus patterns and draw for New Year or Pongal.
