If you have good quality colours, you can draw directly with bright colours. For the basic design on colour can be used and the patterns /motifs used for decoration can be with different colours.
Two types of patterns have been used; two or three different and matching colours can be used for each pattern. Place diyas on the edges of the star without smudging the decorations. If you are looking for simple rangoli for Dhanteras this rangoli may be of use.
After drawing the pair of triangles, I pause a little thinking as to how to proceed further. The 6 edges have to be decorated as also the gaps between any two edges. The motifs chosen should be in harmony.
The space inside the triangles also has to be filled with patterns or motifs. I chose to fill it partially with curved lines. Maybe a diya design at the centre may be suitable for the occasion, somehow, I filled it with just a spiral and stopped there.

Rangoli sans dots are called pulli illatha kolam in Tamil Nadu. The inverted triangles are drawn by checking visually the lengths of the sides. The result should be as symmetrical as possible. After this it is child's play. The next step is to draw 2 sets of 3 curved lines to join the edges of the triangles. The result is as shown in the rangoli photo below.

There was a discussion with one of the viewers who objected to the use of counterclockwise spirals. I welcome constructive criticism. So far as I am concerned, we should draw the kolam using the method we feel comfortable with. Is the outcome acceptable and attractive, that should suffice. Anyways, everyone has his/her way of looking at things. I feel that any method is all right so far as we practice the art daily at the entrance. Rangoli tips - The curved lines also have to be of the same curvature which will result in symmetry obtained after drawing triangles continues to be maintained.

Also, as a small rangoli without chukki for Dasara festival. I like double line rangoli designs and in motifs spirals and birds are among my most favourites. Spirals and floral petal patterns above them match very well. Since the space available is less, I have chosen discrete floral petals. There is another type I draw, continuous floral petals.
