Kolam by Sudha Balaji

A collection of traditional kolams for the month-long celebrations of Fridays during the auspicious Shravan month.  In Tamil Nadu this is the month when weddings are celebrated.   Aashad month is not preferred for marriages.  We have various festivals including Mangala  Gowri , Jeevthi Pooja, Varamalakshmi Pooja during this month.  Traditional designs with lines are among the best rangoli for any occasion. This diya rangoli is with 9 dots three rows, 7,5,3,1 dot 9 chukki rangoli with one step - theme diya or lamps In the design below I have used patterns that represent Goddess Lakshmi's Feet.  Such designs are considered auspicious and are used for festivals and celebration of Shravan Fridays  We can try these kolam for Friday rangoli designs too 

 Try this different padi kolam for Sri Krishna Jayanthi.  You have to believe it, I created this instantaneously.  Lotus patterns are most welcome for festivals.  This is where I thought for a while before adding them as shown in the images. Dots, spirals, shading always add more beauty to the kolam .  White rangoli is also beautiful, we can display it without colours as is usually done.  You can also try it for Sankranthi geethala muggulu new designs  These without chukki rangoli drawn mostly with lines are intricate  Old fashioned rangoli designs are among the top rangoli.  We can try once for Diwali, Dhanteras. Naga Chaturthi rangoli | muggulu A festival celebrated for the well being of children and siblings has snake rangoli designs as an important part of the festival celebration.  Some snake ( haavu ) rangoli designs for the festival. If you would like a trendy and different Naga kolam you can try this design. Tip - There is a tradition of drawing a serpent and her young one on the outside wall near the entrance and also in the Pooja room. This gallery of designs with steps through the images is created by tools available in our homes. The first rangoli above , we start with a circle that can be drawn using any plate available in our homes.  Using this as the base the patterns are created with rangoli colours and cotton bud. The next rangoli uses cookie cutters and CD. Place the CD as shown in the image then place cookie cutters of different decreasing diameter as shown and fill with different colours. Ugadi is the (lunar ) new year celebrated in Andhra Pradesh (as Telugu new year), Karnataka (Ugadi Habba).   It is celebrated as Gudi Padava in Maharastra.   It falls on the first day after new moon day in the month of Chaitra.  "Padava" is the first day after new moon or full moon day.    A new lunar calender is purchased and puja is performed.  Gudi means flag staff ( also called Indradwaja ).   Usually a thin bamboo pole about 2 metres long is decorated with alternate stripes of red ochre and white colour.   A new cloth is tied to the pole with  mango leaves with some flowers added.  A cup made from silver is inverted on the pole.   We usually place the new almanac at the base of the staff on a plank and offerings are given.   This day is also related to the victory of the army of Shivaji Maharaj.
