Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Corner rangoli designs for Diwali kolam

As the name suggests, they are drawn on the corner of a bigger rangoli pattern or at the corner of a room

 They are actually rangoli borders

It is natural to use flowers like lotus are used for freehand rangoli designs with our own decorations added to them.

I have to use more lotuses and other flowers, birds and animals for my freehand rangoli.

I have shared 5 ideas in white kolam (after all I belong to the traditional school of kolam ) .

These ideas can be used in colour.

The name of the website is Rangoli sans dots .  So drawing free hand rangoli designs is my bread and butter.  I just love to create them.

"Kolam and music combination is phenomenal... I am looking forward for more of these videos with a perfect blend of rangoli and music " This is feedback from one of my social media accounts.

Actually, classical Indian music blends well with kolam , I think.  Facebook offers a beautiful collection of Carnatic music songs

I would request you to also visit my Facebook and Instagram rangoli video channels on social media. I also have a YouTube channel - popular search terms being "Sudha Balaji kolam" "Sudha Balaji Rangolisansdots".

The reason why I mentioned Facebook and Instagram is because the background music I use (it is offered by with the platforms with the permission of the copyrights owners) will be a treat to the ears while kolam art is a treat to the eyes.

Invariably, I use Carnatic music for my videos on Facebook.  For Instagram I also use old Tamil film songs and occasionally old Hindi songs.  This kindles nostalgic memories for me and may also do so for my viewers, many of them who are in their forties and fifties.

I share some old Tamil songs which are long forgotten, and it is not surprising to receive comments thanking me for sharing those songs again.

On Instagram we can only share ninety seconds of music and so I try to share the best part of the songs.  If you can understand the lyrics, it will be sweeter.  Songs written by Kannadasan, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, are among my favourites.
