Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Chinna Sikku kolangal eppadi poduvathu

Sikku kolam is like football when a defender twists his legs, falls when tricked by a forward.  I don't know whether it is a correct analogy,  sometimes I'm reminded of this whenever I am caught midway in the kolam !! First a small and beautiful sikku kolam rangoli. Like many chikku kolam this design also can be drawn with bigger dots 7,9,11 etc.  I have tried with 7,9,11 dots. We have to focus like Arjuna for 9 and 11 dots. The dot pattern is 5 dots 3 rows then 4,3,2,1 dot If you are looking for gantina rangoli, small melikala muggulu with dots, thipkyanchi rangoli old yes, this type may be the one of the oldest types) you may like this post If you are looking for small kambi kolam for beginners  or simple pinnal kolam  you may find some of the rangoli shared here useful to you. Anju pulli sikku kolangal Two more simple sikku kolangal with a few steps are shown below For this design the dot pattern is 5 dots 3 rows then one d...

There are two ways of drawing a big chikku kolam.  One with big dot grids or using small kolams and connecting them. This kolam uses a common 5 by 5 dots chikku kolam. These type are also called kulam kolam.  Kulam means pond.  The centre of the design represents the pond and the four sides the steps that lead to the pond as we see in temples of Tamil Nadu Big sikku kolam for Margazhi  Big neli kolam for Pongal too They are old and traditional rangoli designs The centre can be filled with designs of our choice.  This design can be expanded infinitely. Another variation of kulam kolam using 4 by 4 dots shown step by step in the pictures below Also called melikala muggulu , kambi kolam  10 pulli chikku kolam The dot pattern is 10 dots 4  rows, then 8,6,4 dots Other names are pinnal kolam , nelivu kolam Though dot patterns are used they are not chukkala muggulu or chukki rangoli.  They differ because the lines go...
