Easy rangoli designs - beginners

30+ rangoli kolam simple designs  Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate. Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star w...

Lotus chukki rangoli new design kamala

Step by step images for the chukki rangoli for competition - Kamala rangoli design with 15 by 15 chukki -Step by step images for a kamala kolam.

This design is inspired by Maharastrian rangoli designs with dots.  They usually use a square dot grid.
The dot grid is 15 by 15.

For this kolam , it is preferable to add colourful lines instead of filling up the entire design with colours.
On social media like YouTube, few viewers request me to post vlogs (vlogs are videos showing a day in our lives at our homes).  I am not comfortable with it.

I think my personal life should not be made public.  Since only my hand drawing rangoli is visible in most of the videos, occasionally I appear before the camera.  I also post some photos of me taken on various occasions.

The next step - first draw the design in white for the chukki rangoli design with colours. Discipline, concentration, confidence and patience are the important requisites for creating an aesthetically pleasing rangoli design. We would have observed that even if we have loads of experience, if one of the four parameters is lacking on a day, we do not get the desired result.  This is particularly more important when we draw big rangoli designs for festivals like Navarathri or Dasara.

Start from the centre as shown in the first picture. Actually, when we start a rangoli the dots will show up and ask to be connected.

After drawing the 4 lotus patterns on four sides using straight lines draw a petal at the base (similar to how we open a kamala for decorating Goddess Lakshmi picture) to make it appear more natural.
The remaining dots are completed with lotus buds and other patterns.

Rangoli tip: Some of my followers were disappointed that when they draw the sizes of the patterns in dotted kolam are not uniform.  Petals and flowers also are of different sizes. They asked me for a solution.

My suggestion is when you place the dots maintain the gaps in the horizontal rows and columns as uniform as possible.  When we connect the dots the sizes and shapes will be uniform.  For those who find it difficult to place dots uniformly, dot grids are available. I have seen them in Ghatkopar market in Mumbai when I went there.

We may get it in other places also.  I am not sure whether the dot grids are available online.   This rangoli has kindled the interest of a viewer in this divine art.  This is here favourite rangoli for Sankranthi.  She also requested me for Sri Chakra rangoli.

In my opinion whatever we should share only what we know.  I am yet to try Sri Chakra kolam.  I do not know whether it can be drawn at home.  I have seen pundits draw it at yagnas.

Make a note of this post if you landed here looking for lotus kolam simple and beautiful, lotus rangoli aesthetic.
