Lotus patterns before the banana leaf or plate. Turmeric powder is considered to be auspicious hence it is added to the kola podi.
Some designs are given in the images.
Also drawn at home for festivals.
This is a double or rettai ezhai kolam - the two ezhai or lines drawn simultaneously. I have shown images of rangoli designs drawn before a banana leaf ( vazhai ilai decoration).
Traditionally this leaf is used for serving meals for weddings and other functions.
For important festivals like Varalakshmi Vratham, Ganesh Chathurti, Navaratri there is also a tradition of decorating the banana leaf or plate on which the naivedyam is served to the family members with this type of kolam.
For the leaves on which the bride and bridegroom dine, more elaborate kolam can be drawn.
This post may also answer the following
a) Tamil wedding kolam
b) Rangoli designs for marriage function
Nuni elai as it called is that part of a banana leaf that tapers (the outer edge of the leaf when it grows on a banana plant - not a tree since it lacks a woody trunk, I think so. what is your opinion). the leaf is placed so that the narrow portion comes to the left of the person who sits with the leaf before him/her.
This is the tradition followed for all festivals and functions. If you observe, in weddings they serve only on nuni elai , provided it is not a buffet.
This simple art form is part of our everyday lives, be it the kolam at dawn or for wedding decorations as shown in the examples above or drawn on the floor, entrance for various festivals and occasions. Some say there is mathematical reasoning in this art. Some are overawed by the simplicity of the art still encompassing creativity, dexterity, variety and of course Mathematics in some types of kolam. Maybe when we draw kolam we are doing something not ordinary but do not realise it. However, for me it is a daily way of performing Pooja to the entrance just as we do Pooja to the Gods in the Puja room.
