Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate. Chukki rangoli easy method

The step-by-step images show how a simple dot rangoli can be made very beautiful by adding patterns in the gaps.  

This is one of the main aspects - try to have minimum space, fill with patterns - only thing is that all patterns should match one other - should be congruous or harmonious with other patterns. 

This post for learning some simple chukki rangoli with dots.  Just as we had (hope it is still the case in school textbooks 😊😊) worked out examples, 

I have shown the first simple chukki rangoli design for home with all steps.  

Then I have shared the image of the completed chukki rangoli easy with dots for practice.

This is one of the many small and simple rangoli designs with dots, I created for my social media handles.  For those who may not be aware I am active on YouTube, Facebook. I am also venturing into Instagram and have this easy rangoli website too. The pattern drawn at the top resembles the Lakshmi padham drawn in padi kolam.  I have drawn four such designs after connecting some dots to form the V shaped pattern formed in the first chukki rangoli image.

white rangoli with dots, through pics.  Now that we have only four remaining dots at the corners and one at the centre let us think how to decorate them. Spiral motifs will sit easily at the four edges, and it is easy to modify them into flowers with petals.  Rangoli tips - we should beforehand decide on the number of petals possible around the spiral and in the gap so that all of them are more or less of equal width.  When I draw the floral petals like these usually, I have the hibiscus in mind.

Adding some standard or commonly used motifs make a simple kolam look awesome. The gap between any two flowers is filled with simple petal motifs. Since spirals have already been used it is avoided at the centre which is decorated with petals motifs so that all elements of the white rangoli design as a whole appear to be in harmony.
