Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Kolam designs with big dot grid are commonly used during Margazhi  season.  One such common kolam  , my kolam is slightly modified when compared with the original version.

The theme is using a pair of birds on all four sides with the remaining dots being used up with some simple patterns like flowers, leaves.

I have retained the original birds but have modified the other patterns.  We can also have nestlings too in this kolam.  The dot grid is 17 to 1.

The beauty of this art is that it is handed over from generation to generation, I learnt from my mother and she in turn learnt from her mother.  Consequently, no one knows who created these designs, particularly pulli kolam.  While free hand rangoli designs depend upon our creativity (in fact, many a time I change the design while drawing).  Pulli kolam can be standardised because there is a restriction due to the dot grid.  So, someone created these designs and has been handed over to us by our elders.  Having said that, I have created quite a few chukki rangolis.  Also, we can add our creativity for pulli kolam by adding motifs in and around the main kolam.
