Easy rangoli designs - beginners

30+ rangoli kolam simple designs  Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate. Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star w...

This kolam uses a dot grid -  2 rows of 12 dots and then 10,8,6,4,2 on either side.  The dots are connected using straight lines.  The final image appears simple but we can get confused.  So I have few pictures to guide us from the beginning of the kolam  through various steps to make it somewhat easy to learn , practice and draw.  There a maze of lines connecting the dots.   I have add few colourful dots from bullets to make is suitable for the festival of colours Diwali also.  if we want a different rangoli with dots for Diwali  12 to 2 dots rangoli with dots Chukki rangoli new design for Dasara 12 dots kolam images simple Pulli vacha kolam for  Navarathri 12 dots kolam easy Place colourful bullets and draw as a latest kolam for New Year  12 pulli kolam simple  Aishwarya kolam I drew for my YouTube channel was the official video for the platform for many weeks.  I do not know whether Google still follows this conce...

15 dots kolam new designs Bhogi

Image
This blog post may have answers to 1) How to draw rangoli with dots 2) How to draw muggulu with dots.  One of the bigger rangoli created by me. Dot pattern is 15 to 1. Number of dots decreases viz. (15,13,9,7,5,3,1) Though it is with 15 dots it is relatively easy to draw.   The patterns below the neck (that represent the wings! are drawn first on the four sides.   The beauty of this kolam lies in the symmetry of the patterns.   One of the advantages or creating rangoli designs is that the result may be a unique rangoli.   Actually, I thought of drawing butterflies and flowers but changed the theme to birds and flowers.   Floral patterns are congruous with pakshi or titli (occasionally I use other languages too to describe the patterns to make it easy for those who are familiar with the terms in their mother tongue). `13-7 chukki rangoli

This post may answer the queries - how to draw rangoli step by step, how to draw rangoli with dots.  These are interlaced dots i.e the current row of dots is placed between the previous rows.  Mark this post for New Year rangoli or Deepavali rangoli designs. Some information about the first rangoli.  It must be attractive to see but it may be difficult to master for some of us.   What is otherwise a very simple chukki rangoli design for Sankranti one may face problems in ensuring that all the pumpkin ( poosanikkai in Tamil) patterns drawn around the central star design just touch each other.   All of them should just touch each other.  In some or all of them we may face the problem of leaving a gap or overlapping/intersecting (like a Venn diagram).  The main criterion to avoid them is to have dot grid placed perfectly with equal gaps among the dots.   Draw the floral (sometimes called pumpkin patterns in Tamil) starting from o...

Simple New year rangoli kolam designs

Image
The kolam below can be considered to be a floral design with many layers of petals of various shapes.  Again, add colourful lines parallel to the white design to get this simple but beautiful rangoli.   A white version of this rangoli has been uploaded elsewhere.  Comparing both will give us an idea how colours can influence the attractiveness of a rangoli design.  No intermediate steps for this simple rangoli in the pictures below for reference the image in colour is itself self explanatory.   A kolam without dots inspired by jewellery (ear ring or thodu in Tamil !) Try also for simple Sankranti rangoli The rangoli below (with blue and brown petals) is another of the many floral designs I have tried in  Rangoli-sans-dots   The flower at the centre has been surrounded by one more flower.    The edges of the petals of the outer flower and in between them some simple patterns have been drawn.   Then colourful lines ...

Beautiful rose rangoli Diwali decoration

Image
How to draw a rose kolam with dots ( 15 to 8  chukki rangoli  ) -  Rose kolam with a 15 to 8 dot pattern is one of the most common rangoli that is drawn quite frequently for special occasions or for festivals like - Diwali kolam designs with dots or Dhanteras rangoli with dots. Start at the centre.  The image above shows how to proceed.  You will observe from the images that I do not draw the pattern with a piece of chalk before drawing with rangoli powder.  This is the preferable method of practising such complicated patterns. An intermediate step for the rose flower muggulu with dots. Rangoli tip - When we draw such big designs and sprinkle colours it is possible that they will spill on the rangoli.   While we should do carefully, do not worry if it happens.  After filling the colours once again draw the entire design with white rangoli .   This will take care of the spilt colours and also enhance the beauty of the main de...

Yanai kolam enugu muggulu for Sankranthi

Image
This is a huge elephant kolam (excuse the pun !!) with 21 by 1 dots.   One of the favourites for Sankranthi muggulu or Pongal kolam.  It is not very time consuming since the patterns repeat.  Once we know how to draw one of the elephants (of the herd !!) it is easy to draw the other elephants.   The patterns at the centre and those at the dots remaining at the four corners can be drawn according to our wish.   This is also suitable for New Year rangoli design if you are looking for big kolam I presume that someone who comes in search of grand kolam may have a long experience in drawing rangoli the traditional way.  So, the steps are in the reverse order :) I have shown only the white muggu.  We can add colour as we please.  That is the liberty we have in kolam art.  Elephants need not be grey; they can be filled with any bright colour. If you are looking for chukki rangoli big size, big pulli kolam designs with steps or big ...

Puthandu kolam New Year rangoli designs

Image
Happy New Year kolam , Welcome New Year rangoli designs are ubiquitous on New Year eve.   Many homes are adorned with colourful kolangal with one of these messages on the kolam itself.   Some may prefer to draw a big pulli kolam and write the message on the top or bottom of the kolam.   I have shared some ideas for them.   I invariably draw a rangoli sans dots (not surprising!) and write the message outside the rangoli.  This is a different type of kolam that we can try to make others look in awe.  The dot pattern is 7 dots at the centre, 8,9,10,3,2,1 on either side.   "My mom used to make similar rangolis early in the morning at 5.30 before starting her daily work and then heading to the office.  Every time I see your rangolis on that black stone, it brings back those memories.  I could just keep watching them forever " Social media as some say is a double-edged sword.  I am happy that I contribute in a positive...
