Many of us buy new clothes for Deepavali.  In Tamil Nadu we buy new clothes for Pongal festival too.
In our family we buy new vastras for Lord Ganesha of the nearby temple first and only after that we buy clothes for ourselves.

On Diwali day we as a family go to the Ganesha temple wearing new clothes, usually at 9 am in the morning or sometimes in the evening after 6 pm.

We offer the new vastras purchased for Him.  I am pleasantly surprised to see this habit among many people because there are dozens of vastras adorning Him on this day.
