A collection of traditional kolams for the month-long celebrations of Fridays during the auspicious Shravan month. In Tamil Nadu this is the month when weddings are celebrated.
Aashad month is not preferred for marriages. We have various festivals including Mangala Gowri, Jeevthi Pooja, Varamalakshmi Pooja during this month. Traditional designs with lines are among the best rangoli for any occasion.
Jivthi Pooja or Jeevathi Pooja is popular in Maharashtra. It is celebrated for four or five Fridays during the month depending upon the number of Fridays we get according to the calendar.
Betel leaf garland is offered to Her. She is considered to be the protector of children. Some offer puran harathi to the Goddess.
I offer harathi with banana(fruit). The same harathi is also shown to the children requesting Her to protect them and their families.
I make kheer every Friday during this month. Of course, rangoli is an important aspect we consider in the celebration of any festival.

Shravana masa rangoli, traditional white muggulu designs
Coming to the rangoli, the pairs of lines, intersecting, drawn at the centre of the square in the kolam image shown above is the standard decoration in old style rangoli designs drawn with traditional method. Creativity should permit us to decorate it with any other design of our choice or imagination. For example, we can draw lotus, diya or other floral motifs.
This diya rangoli is with 9 dots three rows, 7,5,3,1 dot

Image shows step for 9 dots chukki rangoli
In the two pics shown above and below, 9 chukki rangoli with one step - theme diya or lamps.
Many I time, I create my own rangoli designs with dots too. Freehand kolam demands imagination and skill. A decade back, several requests were there for dot rangoli type too. Hence, I started creating them. Some of them became viral on social media. I discovered that at least one of them has been used in an advertisement.

White rangoli simple and beautiful
In the design below I have used patterns that represent Goddess Lakshmi's Feet. Such designs are considered auspicious and are used for festivals and celebration of Shravan Fridays. If you observe in the image below also, I have used the pair of intersecting lines in the square pattern at the centre. It is a standard practice in old model rangoli.

Padi kolam for Avani Avittam
Avani Avittam is a festival of sacred thread celebrated during Shravana month in southern part of India. We can try these kolam for Friday rangoli designs too. If you are looking for some old style kolam for Sawan rangoli designs or Avani mathan kolam (Tamil) or Shravana masa rangoli (Kannada) you may try one of these. However, if you are not satisfied with the designs. There are thousands (I have stopped keeping track of the number of images shared as examples and case studies, though I did it initially by captioning each image with rangoli no.) of various types of rangoli designs ranging from small to big, traditional to modern, white rangoli to colourful ones, many of them simple and beautiful. There are some difficult types to that can be challenging. Please take time to read the blog whenever you get time or as and when you get time!
