Drishyam or visuals are the best ways of remembering things. I observed by mother and elder sisters draw rangoli designs daily and of course for Margazhi , Pongal festivals.
For 30 days they made huge rangoli designs both free hand and with colours. My task was to pick up the boxes with colours and give it to them, occasionally I was given the responsibility of filling colours in one element!
I learnt observing them and then practising lines and patterns on my own on a cement floor. I have come a long way since then.
I have shared the step-by-step images for just one rangoli in this blog post. A common pulli kolam drawn in our family for decades particular for Sankranti festival
Simple flower patterns and butterflies are matching designs in any rangoli.
It is very easy to represent butterflies and flowers in muggulu . That is the beauty of this art. All of us can become artists.
This 15 chukki rangoli can also be drawn for Dasara for golu decoration.
A very simple muggu with
butterfly and flower patterns. We can try for Dhanurmasam, New Year or Sankranthi festival.
In early days of Rangolisansdots, I took pictures of various steps of a rangoli kolam converted them into a slide show on Windows Movie Maker and shared it as a video.
On hindsight I think that was a good idea because each slide was 5 seconds long and gave enough time for viewers to learn. Nowadays while many are satisfied with the upload, few say it fast and a few others say it is slow!!
Movie Maker had a lot of limitations and hence I started making regular videos on professional software. Video shooting and editing is done most of the times by my husband though I do rarely too.
My husband taunts me saying that after shooting a lot of rangoli videos he has gained theoretic knowledge of the art and says his only problem is that he is not able to draw perfect lines.
On a few occasions he will switch on the camera, focus it and start shooting the kolam video. Midway he sometimes goes away to attend an important call (though it is in the evening at 9 pm or so - the time we shoot our videos, after dinner) completely forgetting about the camera.
On my part I am engrossed in drawing the design and do not look up. The result when he returns the camera stops showing the message "card full" - meaning there is no space in the memory card. The whole effort goes waste. I have to draw again and make the video again but that is invariably on another day.
