Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

b) Oleander (Arali)
c) Night jasmine (parijatham )
d) Spanish Jasmine ( jathi malli )
e) Chrysanthemum (Sevanthi)
f) Arabian Jasmine (Mullai)
g) Champak ( shenbagam )
h) Screw pine ( thazham poo )
i ) Calotropis( Erukkam poo)
j) Datura ( oomathai poo)
k) Spanish cherry flower ( maghizam )
l) Cassia fistula ( Konrai )
m) Orchid ( mandharai )
n) Thumbe ( Thumbai )

If there is any discrepancy in English names, please let me know

Jasmine - select flowers that are big and with long stalks.  Long stalks make it easy to string.  This is the reason it is easy to string jathi malli.

Jathi malli blooms very quickly so we should use the garlands as quickly possible.

Mullai - buds should not be placed inside the refrigerator since it will not bloom fully if kept inside the refrigerator.  It can be kept in the frig after it has bloomed partially.

Samanthi or chrysanthemum - when stringing the flowers maintain a little more distance than other flowers only then it is easier to "tie" them.

Shenbagam- I purchase in Koyambedu flower market where we get 100 flowers for Rs.120 on normal days (normal day - days other than Thursday, Friday and festivals like Varalakshmi Vratham are over.  I shared a garland made from these flowers on YouTube.  One viewer said she has a tree in her house, and she gets 50 flowers daily during the season.  I think is lucky and blessed too.  The fragrance of this flower is divine, and it continues ever after it withers.

Thazham poo should be purchased after checking the petals held safely inside the "sepals?"  with thorns by Mother Nature.
