I have chosen the kolam for 9 days. You can choose it in any order according to your preference
For a change instead of step-by-step pics I have shared only the final completed kolams. Decorate with kaavi and draw for the golu. We can keep the designs as simple as possible, or we can draw big and complicated designs if we are comfortable with such rangoli. It is important that we follow the tradition of celebrating Navarathri with kolu , kolam etc. so, the size of the kolam does not matter.
Day 1 - Navratri rangoli simple
Day 5 without chukki rangoli
Day 6 - birds rangoli
Day 7 or for Navarathri Friday , small beautiful padi kolam
Day 8 of Navaratri kolangal
Day 9 for Ayudha Pooja or Saraswathi Pooja
I have shared only the white kolam designs except the one above. We can add kaavi to denote auspicious festival or add simple colour schemes as demonstrated in the muggu above.
In our hometown, Omalur we celebrated Navaratri in our home with a lot of joy and grandeur. My elder sister drew beautiful colourful rangoli designs on all nine days during Navaratri festival, my father was a trustee of Sai Samaj. We had an idol (many years later we handed over the idol to S,ivan Temple in Omalur) of Shridi Sai Baba. Navaratri festival coincides with Sai Baba Aaradhana. So, it was additional joy for us to celebrate Aaradhana along with Navarathri festival. The Aaradhana concluded on Vijayadasami. In the morning, we had Sahasranama Archana. We brought three or four priests for this. The naivedyam was Ven Pongal and vadai. The procession of Sai Baba with all paraphernalia including nadaswaram was taken out in the streets of the town, in the evening. Bursting crackers was also done in the procession. After the procession there was a Sai Baba bhajan in our house for two hours or so. Twenty to thirty persons participated. 10 kg sakkarai Pongal and 10kg kondaikadalai sundal was made by my mother as offering to Him. Invariably, a dog came and waited outside during the bhajan on this day and every Thursday (we had bhajans on Thursdays too). Nowadays we brothers and sisters have settled in various parts of the country. So, we have bhajan on alternate Thursdays via Google Meet.
During Navarathri festival, my elder brother performs Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Pooja. Goddess Face is fixed to a kalasham and a coconut is placed in the kalasam after applying haldi, kumkum. Flowers that are strung are placed on one side and they resemble a braid, an accessory called kunjalam is tied to the flowers and it is divine.
