Easy rangoli designs - beginners

30+ rangoli kolam simple designs  Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate. Kubera kolam with dots chukki rangoli

 Another auspicious kolam for Friday | Varamahalakshmi Habba

We can have a grand kolam with kaavi border.  It is also called kubera kolam .  I have shared this kolam in Puja room kolam category. 

 It is drawn in the Puja room or for the golu / kolu for Navratri.  The images below show the steps to draw this kolam.  The dot grid is the same as that used for Hridaya Kamalam kolam. 

Two more important Pooja room rangoli designs are Hrudaya kamalam and Aishwarya kolam You may want to know the steps. 

The beauty of this kolam is enhanced when we draw the straight lines, in a single stretch. Joints are to be avoided.

The lines also should be as thin as practically possible.  Thinner lines come with experience. Also take minimum kola podi.

Place 5 dots in eight rows around a central dot

My mother-in-law told us that Mahaperiya the Holy Pontiff of Kanchi Mutt, once said, Jagatguru means Jagam is your Guru, i.e. world is the teacher.  Learn from other human beings, birds and animals too.  I have been receptive to knowledge in this art.  This special rangoli design, I learnt from my sister-in-law (elder brother's wife).

Traditional Pooja room kolam ideas 

It is very painful for me to see rangoli stickers outside houses and in Pooja rooms. Whenever I visit any friends or relatives, I observe whether they draw traditional kolam.  I do not discuss with them or comment. 

 When I started posting rangoli on social media some professionals advised not to share all my knowledge in this art. 

 So far as I am concerned, I want to make my little contribution to this art to ensure that the continuity of practising kolam is maintained for generations to come.
