Easy rangoli designs - beginners

Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate . Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star with two inverted triangles.   ...

Karthigai Deepam kolam simple

The dot pattern is 9 by 5.  Connect the dots with lines as shown in the second picture.  Add diya or deepam patterns.  Add kavi or colours .  Place diyas around the kolam  .  This chukki rangoli 9 by 5 can be used for festivals like Varamahalakshmi Pooja also

Either we can use diya patterns or convert them into lotuses to represent Goddess Lakshmi.  Stars and spirals are very much useful in creating muggulu This was created long back.  I do not make a note of the date on which it was drawn first.  As and when I feel that a particular design can be shared on social media, I do it.

We can stop this 9 pulli kolam with the design in the previous image also

The next rangoli in this collection in the picture below.  I have added only the completed pic for two reasons.

One it is quite simple and straight forward.  Two I do not want to burden the browser with more images.  There are posts in this blog with scores of images, so I want to limit them wherever possible.  This kolam also starts with a star pattern.

Four lines on all sides of the start to complete the basic pattern.

Four because traditionally we use 2 or 4 lines for festival kolangal.  I use five also occasionally.  While the star is simple creating lamp designs to match so that as a whole it looks more attractive.

As I usually do, I have added dots in the gaps between the lamps.  Decorate with kavi or ochre colour powder.  We can draw a bigger version if space is available and place lamps outside all the diya patterns.

It will be attractive and when the light from diyas fall on the white kolam it is a bliss to see.  Please try and experience it
