Easy rangoli designs - beginners

30+ rangoli kolam simple designs  Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate. Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star w...

Vaikasi Visakam kolam

For a change the pics showing the steps in the reverse order :) Invariably, Vaikasi Visakam falls on a Pournami like other festivals like Avani Avittam, Thai Poosam, Masi Magam etc.

Decorate this kolam with kavi or colours and beautify your house for the festival.

The image showing the first step may be described as an indistinctive bell-shaped pattern but definitely not a common design. It should give an idea that something different is in the offing.

The second image shows how after turning bell shaped motifs into something more attractive. Now add spirals and dots and dashes. This is one of my most favourite methods of decorating spirals.

I use them to represent flowers, solar designs and tails of birds. The result is a simple attractive rangoli for this festival.

As for any festival decorate with geru or ochre.  Kolam tips - Dots are among the quickest and simplest methods of decorating an otherwise ordinary rangoli. The picture below may justify it.

Simple without chukki rangoli design step by step. Rangoli tips - For drawing the vein like shapes shown in the picture below, take minimum quantity of vellai kola maavu and use it to draw as many very short lines as possible, quick and fast. They may also be considered to represent needle leaves that we see in some types of trees and shrubs. Let me digress to my other favourite subject Botany (I studied Botany and Zoology.  That was decades ago, so from what I remember, needle leaves are not for just decoration, they help is reducing water loss. Nature has its own way of endurance for continuation of the species.

Pulli illatha kolam , white rangoli design few more images showing the steps - Kolam tips for the first image. Draw the central circle and four arms in four directions.  Then the 4 curved lines connecting the arms and the inverted bell-shaped lines should be symmetrical, of the same size.  Intersections should also be perfect.  Once this is achieved the rest of decorations is just child's play.

How to draw rangoli with hand, white chukkala leni muggulu

Like many other kolam designs on my website this one was also created spontaneously.

Over the years I think I have involuntarily stored lots of patterns in my mind (maybe due to decades of practice - practice means drawing kolam daily at the vasal or entrance).

The results are there in the many images I have shared.  Many patterns have been well received and appreciated, and a few have been criticised too.

We have to accept that it is "different strokes for different people".  There is no one size fits all.  If there are constructive criticisms, we have to definitely welcome and try to correct ourselves.

The most common comment has been "I did not like the colour combination".  In such cases, I look at the completed rangoli with colours once again to see if there is anything wrong and mentally take notes so that I can improve next time.
