Consequently, the need for quick and easy kolam. We can try big and elaborate designs for festivals and functions and reserve small kolangal for our daily use.
Also, nowadays most live in flats and the space available to draw kolam is restricted. This is also a reason why small and simple kolams are in great demand.
The pictures give some ideas on how we can create beautiful designs with just three dots. Sky is the limit when we let our imagination run riot.
It is possible to create beautiful kolams using the smallest dot grids. Hope the above pictures prove it.
One important point to be noted is that small pulli vecha kolams or chukkala muggulu chinnavi that are drawn with dots can also be drawn without dots.
However, many of us find using dot grid to draw kolam useful and we are comfortable with this technique of drawing with dot grids.

The surface I use to draw kolam is a black granite slab. I got the idea of purchasing one after practising on the kitchen counter (which incidentally is a black granite). It was by chance that the background is black and not by choice. It suits the white kolangal, I draw due to the contrast.
For the viewers it is easier to view the design in progress (in videos) due to the contrast. It is roughly 3 feet by 3 feet mounted on a stand with wheels. I sit on the floor to draw the designs. It is pushed below furniture after the videos to ensure that it does not interfere with our movement inside the room.
My husband is finding it difficult to push it, after around nine years. So, in the future I have to cut the slab to make it lighter so that handling can be easy. So, in the future the size of the slab after cutting will determine the size of the kolam, I can draw. I think drawing
big rangoli with 21 dots or so may not be possible.
