Margazhi , New Year, Bhogi .Pongal and also Kanum Pongal - a month of celebrations with bhajans, music in Sabhas, special Pooja in temples.
The main attraction for these month-long festivities are big, beautiful and colourful kolam designs at the entrances of many homes.
This post is about a beautiful and traditional sikku kolam (some call it chikku kolam ).
Others call it neli kolam or kambi kolam. The following pictures show the step-by-step procedure to
draw a wonderful kolam which will leave your neighbours and passersby awestruck. The video for this rangoli was viral on my Facebook and Instagram Pages.
By the way all my Pages are called Rangolisansdots. You may think that the name Rangolisansdots is not suitable for sikku kolam.
For those who are visiting the first time, I started in 2012, primarily with rangoli designs without dots, particularly double line kolangal. Hence the name :)
The dot pattern for this awesome traditional kolam is 16 dots - 4 rows, 10 dots - 3 rows, 4 dots - 3 rows

As they say well begun is half done. Once we place the dot grid with the dots equidistant from one another (when it is done manually, perfection may not be possible, but we should try achieving near perfection)

when we draw the patterns as shown the near perfection of the shapes is also achieved. This is an important tip for drawing symmetrical and beautiful designs.

If you are looking for beautiful kolam designs for competitions, பொà®™்கல் கோலம், big rangoli for festivals, huge muggulu designs for Sankranti this pattern may b, e the one you are looking for :)
I had an interesting conversation on Instagram, recently. A lady said that someone told her/she read somewhere that kolam should be drawn with the middle finger and ring finger only. I was surprised. I told her that I have been following the method of drawing with the thumb and index finger for 50 years. This technique was followed by my mother and grandmother too!!
The oft repeated question to me is why you have named the website Rangolisansdots though you share pulli kolangal also.
For the nth time, I would try to explain with an analogy. We have Rapido in Chennai, a cab aggregator which started as provider of bike services for rent. Later it expanded and started providing cabs too. If you look at the website link it is Rapido. Bike only. That cannot be changed.
If we try to change it lot of problems will be encountered with search engines etc. It is not worth it. In my case, I started with without dots rangoli only, hence the name. Also, I like the name very much, it is unique, I think.
