Easy rangoli designs - beginners

30+ rangoli kolam simple designs  Though I have drawn all the designs myself personally I am thankful to my family for the inputs, information and help in drafting all the posts so far.  I have used the terms kolam  rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type  I find that even the terms rangoli kolam and kolam rangoli are used at  present. The only area where I think kolam are different are in sikku kolam and arisi maavu kolam. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate. Rangoli is muggulu in Telugu and so this post will be useful for those in search of small and simple muggulu for beginners.  This post   may have answers  kutty rangoli /kolam designs The rangoli in the image below is one of the basic designs that can be used for learning.   Form a star w...

Simple muggulu without dots white design

This is from a collection of Dhanurmasam muggulu I posted during 2012.  Now I have shared again with steps.  A very simple and easy muggu.  The white design is in the image above, if we need colours the colourful muggu has also been shared.  We can try this for Sankranti
Chukkalu leni kamalam muggulu
Lotus and rose are the flowers usually drawn in muggulu.  I have also used the hibiscus.  Lotus can be a part of our Friday or Varalakshmi Vratham muggu decoration.
Start with a square base.  This is one of the easiest methods to start in free hand muggulu .  Lotus designs are drawn on all four sides.  It will be nice if we draw all the lotus designs from one side.
The more patterns we add the richer the muggu becomes as is evident from the next few images.
If you are drawing for Friday or Varalakshmi Pooja decorate with a kavi border

The next muggu is a not so easy design, though it is small.  The picture should clarify the central design in particular     A simple border on all four sides completes the muggu

small padi kolam with colour

Quite a small and cute muggu - except for padi kolam and sikku kolam there are few hard and fast rules for this art, sky is the limit for creativity and level of detailing. What is required is time and patience.

We draw just a paisley also at the entrance.  Even this small design is sufficient for our daily purpose muggulu.  I have added colours we can stop at the white muggu level. Above, a triangle and three circles is a common and easy way to start a muggu without dots.  However, usually this is reserved for small designs unlike circular patterns at the centre that can be expanded to infinity, not that this cannot be done but it is rarely the case.

very small muggulu designs

Very small and easy rangoli - Kolam drawn at the entrance is not considered just an art but practised daily with reverence praying for prosperity to Goddess Lakshmi (which I do).  Since it is not treated as just an art form, but as a prayer we make it a point to draw it daily. Once we start drawing daily, we need hundreds of designs to avoid repetition and boredom. With thousands of original designs this rangoli blog should be a sure stop for you to visit and make a note of the designs.

small flower muggulu designs

Drawing butterflies is quite easy in rangoli! Just as Deepavali is a community event when all the friends and relatives meet, enjoy, children burst crackers in groups, drawing muggulu for Sankranthi was a community event when we were young and in the town we lived.  My mother was an expert in freehand muggulu and for my grandmother who lived in Vizianagaram any rangoli competition was a cakewalk.

If one may use the analogy of Carnatic music in rangoli art, freehand muggulu are like alaapana where we have complete freedom to explore while melikala muggulu are like neraval that follows a fixed pattern. I should hurriedly add that by no stretch of imagination, I am qualified to discuss classical music.  I have given my opinion as a common layperson.  Whatever knowledge I obtained was from my mother-in-law who was a qualified singer with a melodious voice.  Let us consider that I was just thinking aloud and penned my thoughts.  If there are any errors in the analogy or if you have a different opinion kindly point out.
