I use cotton available in shops selling Pooja items. I have not tried surgical cotton for Pooja purposes. I think because surgical cotton is in layers working with it may be difficult to make gajje vastra. If we make wicks with surgical cotton it will absorb oil very quickly whereas the lamp with our traditional wick will glow for a longer time.
